Abstract

The dynamic of potentially toxic elements in both, suspended and bottom river sediments, has been subject of research in recent years, showing the importance of their origins knowledge, especially associated with natural sources linked to the geochemical aspects of the rocks, but also to the anthropogenic origin, that affect the water and bottom sediments quality by industrial, agricultural and urban activities (domestic effluents). The regions that comprise the Jundiaí and Capivari drainage basins have been suffering significant anthropogenic influences especially for agricultural growth and industrial development. This present research proposal shows, with more detail, the chemical speciation of the main potentially toxic elements in Jundiai and Capivari drainage basins sediments, from the beginning until near of the mouth, considering the distributions of concentrations in bottom sediments depth profiles and suspended sediments, toxicity criteria, origin and controlling factors in sediment/water phase, involving natural and anthropogenic bioavailability mechanisms. These features will allow a better understanding of the body water behavior and, additionally, can be used as subsidies for planning and appropriate management of the drainage basins, in function of antropic pressures that Jundiaí and Capivari areas are inserted.
