Biomaterials are used during a indeterminate period of time as a whole or as a part of a biological system for treatment, ampliation or replacement of any tissues, organs or body functions. The objective of this study will be to make a histological and histomorphometric evaluation of bioglass, lyophilized bovine bone, and a combination of lyophilized bovine bone with bioglass use (1:1) in critical bone defects created in rats calvaria. To this, critical bone defects of 8 mm in diameter will be surgically created in the calvaria of 24 rats (Rattus norvegicus, Albinus variation Holtzman) and filled with blood clot (negative control), bioglass, lyophilized bovine bone, and the association between bovine bone lyophilized and bioglass, in a 1:1 ratio, and covered with collagen membrane, totaling six animals, divided into two experimental periods (15 and 60 days), for each biomaterial. The histological evaluation will be based on the description of the morphology of newly formed tissue in the defect region. As to the histomorphometric evaluation will be based on the quantification of the percentage of newly formed bone, soft tissue and biomaterial remaining in the defect area treated.
