Abstract The hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas is a substance formed from endogenous metabolism of L-cysteine by the action of cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS), cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE), and the 3-sulfur mercaptopiruvato transferase (3MST) (Szabo, 2007). Since the discovery of the endogenous pathway of cysteine - H2S, many efforts have been made to understand the physiological and pathological relations of this gas (Li et al., 2005; Szabo, 2007). Among the known functions of H2S in the body are to participate in the modulation of body temperature (Kwiatkoski et al., 2012), respiration (Hu et al., 2008), and nociception (Cunha et al., 2008). However, the action of H2S in orofacial nociception is not known. By this, the aim of this project is to study the role of H2S in orofacial nociception via the orofacial formalin test in rats. For this purpose, the rats receive subcutaneous injections of drugs that modulate positively or negatively towards nociception. These drugs are injected prior to the orofacial formalin test.(AU) | |
