Abstract

In recent years, a significant increase in the number of scientific papers published in the nanotechnology area has occurred. This is due to new applications that are being discovered with the use of metallic nanoparticles. Among these nanoparticles it is possible to highlight gold nanoparticles (AuNP), which have been used in diagnosis of diseases, in catalysis of specific reactions, in energy conversion, as sensors or in drug-delivery systems. This project aims the development of two types of systems. The first one is based on photo release reaction activated by light and mediated by plasmons of AuNPs produced by photochemical processes. The second system consists in modifying AuNPs by the photopolymerization of 5-viniluracil molecule on the surface of the nanoparticles. A future goal is the study of molecular recognition and construction of SERS sensors. Professor Scaiano's group is one of the world's leading groups in photochemical reactions. In recent years, the group has been studying how to obtain metal nanoparticles by photochemical reactions and how to control their sizes and geometry, as well. Furthermore, Prof. Scaiano's group is studying applications of metallic nanoparticles in catalysis, SERS substrates, photolithography, as biocide and optical devices. (AU)
