Abstract

Caries is a multifactor infectious disease that causes demineralization of hard dental tissues due to the acids produced by bacterial metabolism. Its first clinical sign correspond to a white spot at dental enamel. Current preventive scenario looks for strategies of treatment to early lesions in order to avoid its progression and consequent need of invasive treatment. An alternative treatment to early lesions recently launched in market is the resinous infiltrant. This is a resinous agent with high penetration ability that infiltrates dental tissue and fill the porosities of the demineralized enamel, hampering its progression. Laboratorial investigations that analyze this product have been performed using mainly an artificial caries model. As other models are commonly used in Cariology investigations, they could respond differently to the infiltrant action. Other limitation from the other studies is the lack of a new acid challenge to assess the resistance after treatment. This study aims to evaluate by microhardness, the effect of infiltrant Icon® on different artificial caries lesions and its resistance after new acid challenge. So, artificial caries lesions will be produced in 120 bovine enamel specimens under three different protocols ( MC gel, MHDP solution and DES-RE cycle). The specimens will be treated with Icon® and followed submitted to a new acid challenge DES-RE. Surface and longitudinal microhardness assessment will be evaluated in three times: after demineralization, after treatment with infiltrant and after new acid challenge. The data will be collected and statistically analyzed according to the verified distribution. (AU)
