Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the solubility and repair of glass ionomer cements (GIC) immersed in acidic solutions. Thirty discs of each GIC (VitroFil, Maxxion R, Vitremer, VitroFil LC) were made in a Teflon matrix (10mm x 3mm). The initial weight of the specimens will be measured by a precision balance until they stabilize their weight. Then, they will be divided in three groups and immersed in: distilled water (control group) and Coca-Cola for 15 days 37 º C and hydrochloric acid (simulating gastroesophageal reflux disease) for 2h at 37 ° C. After immersion in the solutions, all specimens will be subjected to repeated cycles of toothbrushing. The specimen will be again weighted to obtain the loss of mass. Then, the specimens will be included in acrylic resin exposing the entire surface of the GIC. After treatment of the original surface by phosphoric acid for 20s, fresh GIC of the same brand will be added in a plastics cylinder. Specimens will be stored in same solutions at 37 degrees C for 7 days, and the shear bond strength will be measured. The fractured surfaces will be examined for mode of failure. Data will be submitted to statistical analysis (ANOVA, Tukey test, p= 0.05).
