Abstract

The intensification of aquaculture induces barriers that affect the health status of production, which is an important factor for the increasing of parasites in fish. Ectoparasites are among the main pathogens of intensive fish farming because they present great easiness of infestation, adaptability to environment and life cycle that in many cases is direct. These pathogens can cause productivity losses and cause irreversible lesions. It also facilitates installation of opportunistic agents and causes the death of their hosts. The forms of control used against ectoparasites are still inefficient in aquaculture. Part of this inefficiency is due to the use of parasiticides with high toxicity to the environment and to not targeted living organisms. The use of natural products as treatment was described for thousands of years, and can be used successfully in aquaculture. Among the most known natural products are herbal medicines that have antimicrobial substances with great potential, and other beneficial properties to its users. This way, we intend to evaluate the chemical properties of four plants essential oils (Melaleuca alternifolia, Lavandula angustifolia, Mentha piperita and Allium sativum), besides their efficacy in vitro against the parasite fish I. multifiliis, and in vivo use of essential oil with better efficacy in vitro.
