Abstract

Formal Auditory Training (FAT) has proven an effective rehabilitation strategy to fit the hearing abilities of Auditory Processing (AP). The use of behavioral tests to determine the effect of the TAF has been previously described, but in Brazil few studies have investigated the plasticity of central auditory nervous system in the elderly using electrophysiological tests. Furthermore, the use of speech stimulus evoked cortical potentials to also been unexplored in this population. The use of a self-assessment questionnaire is important as it provides information on the impact of intervention in everyday situations of the individual. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the FAT in the elderly by means of behavioral assessments, neurophysiological and self-assessment. Method: Participants, aged 60 and 80 years for both sexes, with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and without cognitive impairments, treated at the sector of audiology at the University Hospital School of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo. All individuals carry out an assessment of AP and later will be divided into two groups, one group will be submitted to the FHT (GFAT1) and one shall be subjected to a Placebo Training (GPT). After a month of the end of the intervention, all subjects will be reassessed and the group that received placebo training will start the FAT. The effectiveness of the FAT will be verified by the AP evaluation, electrophysiological evaluation (P300, with a tone burst and speech) using Neuroscan electroencephalographic model STIM2 system ® version 4.0, and the questionnaire wtith complainist about AP. Results: Statistical analysis will be performed by comparing the performance of intra-and inter-group pre-and post-intervention. (AU)
