Abstract

This Project proposes to inquire the Cecilia Westphalen's intellectual trajectory between 1950 and 1980. The historian, student and later disciple of the French historian Fernand Braudel, has been engaged, in Brazil, for what she called "historical science". According her conceiving, resources, specific concepts and methodologies should assure the scientificity to historian's work. The focus turned back to the methodological rigor. We aim to understand the theoretical and methodological foundations of her historical writing - researched from the interpretation of its production - taking into account the complexity of the context of production (current historiographical models, philosophical schools, political and social ongoing), the dialogues and intellectual struggles, configured in different spaces of sociability and knowledge production, as the Universidade Federal do Paraná, Associação Nacional de História and the Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Histórica. Placing us at the time of academic institutionalization and legitimization of historical research of the historian as a professional researcher, to make a study of an intellectual trajectory we search for understand the reconfiguration of Brazilian historiography through the history of those institutions. For the investigation of an intellectual trajectory, questioning the established relationships in certain places of sociability, the notion of intellectual sociability becomes operative. Regarding the meanings of history's writing and the theoretical and methodological principles, we intend to interpret the historical production of Cecilia Westphalen as the result of a historiographical operation.
