Abstract

Actually, the texturing process in metallic parts has been of great importance to the market, with the higher precision requirements in the machining of parts, along with methods that provide reduced wear and less energy loss. Thus, is highly important the research of new texturing techniques that allow creating superficial patterns in the part during the process of conventional machining. It can lead to a competitive advantage to the actual methods of texturing of parts, which include laser, etching, and lithograph. Those methods introduce an additional step to the manufacturing process of the components, whereas, in many situations, are low-productive ones. The texturing of parts by grinding can promote benefits to the machined elements when in service. It is assumed that textured shafts of hydrodynamic bearings can show better results when in use, due to the introduction of previously defined geometric patterns, transferred to the part during the conventional grinding. An example of this application would be the introduction of patterns in automotive crankshafts, among better load capacity, less generation of heat by friction, and controlled runout by the introduction of pre-defined patterns. As direct impacts, it is expected the increase of the engine efficiency, leading to reduced fuel consumption, increased engine power, fewer emissions, and longer engine endurance. Thus, the aim of this work is the evaluation of the texturing process by grinding in shafts, determining the impact of these textures in the performance in service of those components. A methodology will be developed, aiming to quantify the performance of the selected textures. As result, it is expected to determine the operational advantages of the textures produced by grinding.
