Abstract

Bovine mastitis is one of the major barriers for milking business, due its important economic losses, like milk production reduction; cows' death or early slaughters; low production of milk derivate in industry; labor and drug costs for animals' treatment, and also the possibility of pathogens transmission by milk, causing toxi-infections in humans. In case of bovine mastitis caused by microorganisms, both from contagious or environmental sources, the correct identification and epidemiological evaluation of enrolled agents are very important, in order to direct strategic management measures for mastitis cases reduction and control. Corynebacterium bovis (C. bovis) is an actynomicete commonly identified in milk samples from cows with contagious mastitis. Its involvement as primary or secondary causal agent in bovine mastitis is still not clear. The aim of the present study is to correlate the C. bovis occurrence with other pathogens enrolled in clinical or subclinical mastitis in Holstein cattle from a dairy farm with high milk production rates, during a period of eight months. Somatic cell count results and milk production, and also in vitro sensitivity profile of C. bovis isolates against antimicrobials will also be evaluated. Expectation for this study is to get important data for better comprehension of the etiologic and epidemiological roles of C. bovis in mastitis context, contributing for scientific and economic aspects of milk business.
