Bipolar spetrun disorders in severely obese patients candidates for bariatric surgery

Abstract

Background:Obesity and bipolar disorder have become major challenges to medicine. The obesity epidemic has gained global dimensions and bipolar disorder has been diagnosed with ever increasing frequency. In recent years, studies show the correlation between these pathologies.Objective: The objective of this research is to raise the frequency of bipolar spectrum disorder in patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. Studies indicate a high number of psychiatric disorders after surgery and bipolar disorder appears with significant frequency. Method: Patients with morbid obesity who are waiting for Bariatric Surgery, at the Hospital of Clinics, São Paulo will be submitted to specific questionnaires for psychiatric diagnosis: SCID (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Diagnosis ), HCL (Maniac Symptoms Cheklist), MDQ (Mood Disorders Questionnarie ), MADRS (Montgomery_Åsberg Depression Rating Scale-SIGMA ) e M-A QoQLII (Moorehead-Ardelt Quality of Life Questionnaire II) . Patients will be recruited consecutively from the waiting list for Bariatric Surgery Clinic - HC-FMUSP and the sample size is estimated at 400 patients. The frequency of bipolar spectrum disorders and psychiatric comorbidity pattern are calculated and correlated with psychometric scales for detecting disorders of mood and quality of life.Implications of results: Studies indicate a high number of psychiatric disorders after bariatric surgery and bipolar disorder appears with a significant frequency. Systematic reviews of obese patients with bipolar disorder and the introduction of instruments for evaluation will enable future studies to track and identify factors predictive of prognosis.
