Abstract

Literature shows there are conceptual divergences concerning depression, which is sometimes employed as a specific diagnosis, other times as a category implying suffering or as colloquial expression referring to unhappiness or distress. The discussion concerning integral care in the context of nursing care provided to cancer patients brings up subjective and symbolic dimensions of popular knowledge, personal values, of the symbolic perspective of becoming ill due to cancer and depression, which are present in the relationship between nurse and patient. Given this description, this study will interpret the meanings of depression held by cancer patients undergoing treatment. It will be developed with the support of medical anthropology, the ethnographic method and narrative strategy. Bladder cancer patients without a diagnosis of depression cared for in a public health facility will be invited to participate of the research. Data will be collected at the participants' residences through participant observation and in-depth interviews. Developed texts will be interpreted through the process of narrative analysis from the hermeneutic perspective. (AU)
