Abstract

Bovine mastitis, the most significant disease of dairy herds, has huge effects on farm economics due to reduction in milk production and treatment costs. Although some technologies for detection of mastitis are available, there is need for new rapid, sensitive and reliable assays. This proposed research project aims develop sensors by depositing nanostructured polymeric films onto interdigitated electrodes, using the electronic tongue concept for detection of bovine mastitis causing bacteria. The nanostructured films will be synthetized using polymeric materials such as PEDOT (poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PPy (polypyrrole), PSS (polystyrene sulfonate), PANI (polyaniline), etc. Polymeric films will be deposited by the self-assembly-layer-by-layer technique and the dependence of the type and also the number of layers in the sensitivity and reproducibility of each sensor will be investigated. Characterization of the surface morphology, roughness and other physicochemical properties of nanostructured films will be carried out by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, AFM, SEM and optical microscopy. Electronic tongue system will be used for the direct determination of metabolites from bacteria causing bovine mastitis using impedance spectroscopy and data analysis will be performed using statistical techniques such as PCA (Principal Component analysis) and neural networks.
