Abstract

The mortality of calves during the first 48 hours of life represents about 7.1% of the animals born. Among the diseases that affect these animals in perinatal and neonatal periods, the respiratory distress syndrome is the most common, and stands out in animals from premature and dystocic births, as well as in calves originating from in vitro fertilization and cloning . The major cause of this disease is the lack of surfactant in adequate quantity and quality. The surfactant, produced by the lungs functionally mature, is responsible for preventing alveolar collapse, due to its ability to reduce the surface tension. Many studies have been conducted in the field of lung maturation in humans, and it is relatively common the use of ovine and equine as an experimental model. Studies related to lung maturity by amniotic fluid tests in cattle are scarce. In this study, the amniotic fluid of 50 newborn Holstein calves will be collected via nasotracheal intubation, evaluated by the Apgar score, characteristics of hair, teeth, and measure of column and classified as healthy. The goal is to standardize lung maturation in cattle by evaluating color and appearance, and also by the Count of Lamellar Bodies, the Blue Nile Test, the Clements Test and the Meconium Research. This last analysis will be useful for exclusion of the animals who suffered neonatal asphyxia.
