Abstract

The following project of research abroad is a foreseen part of the doctoral project entitled "Edward Lee Thorndike, John Dewey and Mathematics Education during New School Movement in Brazil". The research will have as host institution Teachers College/Columbia University in New York city. Considering the significant exchanges of people and ideas in the field of mathematics education between Brazil and USA, and the investigation object of doctoral research, this project has as main objective to understand Dewey's and Thorndike's contributions to mathematics education and the circulation of ideas, specifically in Brazil considering the relations Brazil-USA in education field. Some concepts will be essential in the analysis of results, even in the process of collecting data. These are the concepts of circulation, appropriation, representation, practice and connected history. These concepts will be handled under cultural history theory. Roger Chartier, Thomas Popkewitz, Serge Gruzinski and Pierre Bourdieu are some of the theoretical references. It will be consulted both written and oral sources. At first, the sources are divided in the following way: Dewey's and Thorndike's archives placed at TC; Dewey's and Thorndike's archives placed in other institutions; oral sources placed at Columbia Center for Oral History; library at TC (Butler Library); editorial archives. The compiled and digitized material will be part of an inventory of sources in CD-Rom at the end of the research. (AU)
