Abstract

Bryozoans of the genus Scrupocellaria are ecologically and economically important in the oceans of the world. They are important members of fouling communities, including a number of invasive species. The genus comprises more than 90 species, but the lack of faunistic and systematic studies means that knowledge about the range and significance of the wide morphological variation and geographic distribution shown among the taxa remains poor. They are no studies on phylogenetic relationships of Scrupocellaria and other taxa of family Candidae. The proposal aims to study the morphology and systematics of Scrupocellaria in view of the resolution of taxonomic problems, and insight into phylogenetic relationships and geographic distribution patterns of the genus, enabling detection of exotic species. The study will be realized though acquiring new data, as well as making further use of the data previously collected during the proponent's doctoral studies. The Postdoc will enable continuation of the projects started by the research group in systematics of Bryozoa, unique in state of São Paulo, as well as developing new collaborations between the proponent and other researchers from different Brazilian and international institutions. The results will consist of published articles in specialized scientific journals and online information made freely available on specialized websites about bryozoans and biodiversity.
