Abstract

Recent studies have shown that osteogenesis can be regulated by post-transcriptional mechanisms such as temporary expression of microRNAs (miRs). The interaction of miRs with its messenger RNA (mRNA) target alters the stability of the mRNA and inhibits the translational process and thereafter the protein expression. MicroRNAs are involved in a plethora of biological processes, including embryonic development, growth, differentiation, cell death and metabolic control as well as the regulation of in vitro osteoblast differentiation and in vivo bone formation, indicating the major role of miRs in bone tissue. Up to now, the literature does not present a deep investigation of the possible relationship between the biomaterials features and miRs expression in bone tissue. In this context, the analysis and comparison of the expression of miRs in RNA samples obtained from bone tissue grown in contact with PTFE and PVDF membranes may contribute to clarify the intracellular mechanisms involved in the interaction between bone tissue and biomaterials and, consequently, the development of new strategies to promote events related to the process of bone repair. This study is part of the project entitled "Effect of the Poly (Vinylidene-Trifluoroethylene)/Barium Titanate Membrane on the Bone Formation in Rat Cavariae Defects", which is financed by FAPESP as research project (2011/10658-8) and master's scholarship (2011/13623-0). The original project is attached in "Outros Documentos". (AU)
