Evaluation of the titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) interaction with sound and demineralized human enamel in vitro

Abstract

This study aims to analyze (1) the presence of elements (SEM-EDS) on the surface of human enamel treated with fluoride varnishes and (2) the formation of CaF2 on the human enamel surface after the application of TiF4 and NaF varnishes in vitro. Human enamel samples (sound and previously demineralized in vitro) will be treated with different concentrations of TiF4 and NaF varnishes for subsequent analysis using SEM-EDS, in order to evaluate the surface qualitative and quantitatively (% elements). To evaluate the amount of CaF2 deposited on the human enamel surface (sound and previously demineralized in vitro) after treatment with TiF4 and NaF varnishes, basic biopsies (KOH-soluble F) will be performed. For the statistical analysis, the assumptions of equality of variances and normal distribution of errors will be checked for all the variables tested. Therefore, data will be tested using the most appropriate statistical test (parametric or non-parametric). The sample size will range from 5 to 10 and significance level for all tests will be set at 5%. (AU)
