Curcumin photodynamic effect in the treatment of the induced Periodontitis in rats: micobiological study

The present study aims to assess the influence of curcumin as a photosensitizing agent in photodynamic therapy antimicrobial (aPDT) in the treatment of periodontitis induced in rats. 96 animals are subjected to induction of periodontitis via the installation of a cotton thread around the first molar on the left side, which is maintained for 7 days. The following animals will be randomly divided into 4 groups, which will receive the following local treatments: G1 (n=24) - no treatment; G2 (n=24) - irrigation with curcumin (40µM); G3 (n=24) - irradiation with Light Emitting Diode (LED); G4 (n=24) - irrigation with curcumin and irradiation with LED (aPDT). The LED that will be used in this study is a semiconductor (INGaN) with a wavelength of 465 to 485 nm and with an irradiance of 600mW/cm2. The LED will be applied 60 seconds after the application of the solution of curcumin on the buccal aspect of the mandibular first molars on the left side for 60 seconds. Microbiological samples are taken from a periodontal pocket of the lower molars immediately before treatment (baseline) at 7, 15, and 30 days post-treatment. Microbiological analysis is processed using the technique of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of the following bacteria: Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). The results will be analyzed with a statistical analysis significance level of 5%. (AU)
