Use of dietary zilpaterol hydrochloride Nelore cattle feedlot

Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the inclusion of zilpaterol hydrochloride ration on performance, feeding behavior and carcass characteristics of feedlot Nellore cattle. Sixty yearling bulls and 60 steers, with average body weight of 385 kg, will be used in this study. The animals will be blocked by weight and two trials will be conducted involving either yearling bulls or steers: Trial 1: yearling bulls divided into two treatments: T1 - control treatment without the inclusion of zilpaterol hydrochloride, T2 - Treatment with the inclusion of zilpaterol hydrochloride; Trial 2: steers divided into two treatments: T1 - control treatment without the inclusion of zilpaterol hydrochloride and T2 - Treatment with inclusion of zilpaterol hydrochloride. Each treatment will consist of 6 pens (5 animals/pen), which will be considered the experimental unit for this study. It will be used a multiple step-up diets for adapting the animals with increasing levels of concentrate from 67% to 85% within 14 days. On the day 15 of the experimental period, animals will receive the finishing ration (85% concentrate) until reach 84 days on feeding. Animals will be fed twice daily (8:00 and 15: 00). The inclusion of 60 mg/animal/day of zilpaterol hydrochloride will start on day 52 of the experimental period, 33 days prior to slaughter. (AU)
