Abstract

This project aims to develop an analysis of the process of modernization in Brazilian theater during 20th century, mainly centered in the assimilation of popular culture elements in the esthetics renovation. In that order I intend to study three of Carlos Alberto Soffredini s plays: Vem Buscar-me que Ainda Sou Teu; Na Carrera do Divino, both written in 1979; and De Onde Vem o Verão, 1991. The analysis will be developed using Alcântara Machado s ideas. He contributed with theatrical critics between 1923 and 1933, and, although by means of writing newspaper chronicles, built a theory of possible directions for the establishment of originality and excellency in Brazilian theater.
