Abstract Cleaner energy sources have been pursued in order to meet the growing global energy demand. The hydrogen gas produced in the wastewater treatment by means of biological processes can be used as an alternative energy source, combining not only the biological treatment of the affluent but also to achieve sustainable energy. The aim of this work is to obtain biological production of hydrogen gas from low concentrations of fructose and glucose similar to those contained in wastewater from citrus industries in the region and characterize the bacterial consortium responsible for hydrogen production in an anaerobic batch. The experiments will be assembled in triplicate, with headspace filled with nitrogen (100%), at 37 ° C, in order to obtain anaerobic cultures producing hydrogen. The inoculum used in granular sludge from upflow anaerobic acidogenic and upflow sludge blanket (UASB) from industrial effluent, previously purified. Physical-chemical and chromatographic analysis related to the consumption of the substrate, hydrogen generation, and other intermediate products such as alcohols and volatile acids will be held. Microbiological examination as phase-contrast microscopy, light common Gram stain, and endospore be used to characterize the morphologies of the microorganisms responsible for the hydrogen bio-production.
