3D morphology and evolution of palps and epidermical glands in interstitial annelids: emphasis on Saccocirridae and Protodrilidae families

Abstract

Despite of the importance for understanding the evolutionary patterns of Annelida, comprehensive phylogenies of exclusively interstitial families are nonexistent. In turn, the combination of techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), 3D computer modeling and molecular techniques may answer systematic, phylogenetic and morpho-funcionas questions about interstitial annelids. During postdoctoral developed in Brazil each species of meiofaunal annelid, especially saccocirrids and prodrilíds collected at Araçá Bay and adjacent areas (project BIOTA / Araçá) were identified and fixed for morphological studies (SEM and CLSM) and molecular. During the internship abroad will be collected species of the same families in type localities, U.S., Italy, Norway and Greenland, to have a representative number, or possibly all, species to build comprehensive phylogenies for Saccocirridae and Prodrilidae. In the Marine Biological Section I can perform advanced bioimaging techniques and DNA sequencing of the species collected in the Atlantic, Arctic and Mediterranean. The microscopic facilities allow the morpho-functional description and determination of homologies of the palps in the Order Protodrilida (Saccocirridae Protodrilidae Protodriloididae). Besides contributing to the knowledge of biodiversity, the proposal will answer questions of evolutionary relevance, morpho-functional patterns, ecological and conservation of interstitial environments, hitherto little tested by the international scientific community.
