Abstract This research aims at providing an inventory and analyzing methodologies of semiotic analysis applied to the study of comics, with the purpose of establishing the state of art of these studies in the scope of contemporary semiotics. The first stage of the study consists of an inventory and description of analyses of comics that explicitly employ concepts of general semiotics, which is comprised of a tradition that includes the French school of semiological and semiotic studies, the American school of semiotic studies and the Russian tradition of studies. The description proposed in this first stage is more general in character, consisting of written descriptive summaries containing: bibliographic information, comics and/or topic analyzed and methodological approach. The second and last stage of the research will focus on the very analysis of studies on comics in the French tradition of semiotics, which has included comics as an object of study in its semiological focus since the 1960s and in the focus of French discursive semiotics since the 1980s. Our hypothesis is that this study is able to provide relevant information regarding the understanding and reformulation of the models of semiotic analysis currently used for comics and for other verbo-visual objects of semiotics, in addition to showing how, in a limited dominion, the evolution of the founding concepts of discursive semiotics occurred in its plastic strand.
