Abstract

The activity of the vascular cambium is significantly altered by endogenous and exogenous factors, and in this project climatic variables and the photoperiod is going to be considered. The temperature and photoperiod are the main environmental variables that affect cambial activity in temperate species, and rainfall seasonality is considered the be the factor that determines the cambial activity in tropical species. Cordiera concolor (Rubiaceae) is a good model species for cambial studies because of the well-defined growth rings in its wood, ideal for use as a growth marker. Therefore, our goals are: to test whether the cambial activity of C. concolor plants increases as a result of increased water availability regardless temperature, photoperiod or both; if the cambial activity will be the same in different conditions of temperature and photoperiod and the same water regime; and if there is interaction between these factors and water availability in relation to cambial activity. We will carry out the experiment in the Seedling Nursery School of Agricultural Sciences, UNESP, Botucatu, São Paulo. Stem of 20 plants will be collected. Samples of the stem will be processed according to the usual techniques in plant anatomy for light and electron microscopy (TEM). We will apply the chi-square test and variance analysis to test whether there will be differences in the behavior of vascular cambium among the plants. With these results we will be able to say if the water availability is a limiting factor for cambial activity to tropical plants.
