Abstract

Leading a group of Nguni origin, Manicusse arrived in Maputo river in early 1820, following the dispersion known as Mfecane, which marked the process of political centralization in Southern Africa, between the Drakensberg mountains and the Indian Ocean. In the following years, the ngunis moved north, supported by a social conformation strongly linked to the appreciation of the warrior and his action as a show of collective strength of the community. With Manicusse, the regimental system became one of the central institutions in Gaza and remained in government following the inkosis with Mawewe (1858-1861), Muzila (1861-1884) and Gungunhana (1884-1895). Taking as its object of study the social group made up of all the warriors ngunis, the research is to analyze your agency in the production of signs and redefinition of identity in the lands of Gaza, embodied in confirming the source as ancestral Inkosi and sovereign power. The hypothesis is that the agency ngunis warriors, validated in the field of social relations, supported the rising power of Inkosi in a community association that returned to the image of his unit in the territory south of what would be termed Mozambique decades later. In order to accomplish this proposal, in addition to sources previously collected - correspondence between governors general and districts in Mozambique, produced under the Secretaria de Estado da Marinha e Ultramar (Semu) of the Government of Portugal, and the reports of subsidized travel Societies by Geography, like Lisbon, Portugal; to Neuchâtel, Switzerland and London, England - the research will involve the consultation of documentary collections of the Arquivo Histórico de Moçambique (AHM), located in Maputo, particularly Funds Governo Geral (GG) and Direção dos Serviços de Administração Civil (DSAC), and the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARS) in your repository in Durban.
