Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the history of the Brazilian cultural affairs politics with emphasis on the role of Brazilian intellectuals and the spreading of their ideas around the world between 1930 and 1950. In order to understand this process, the research proposes to work with the documentation of 'Cultural Division' (Divisão Cultural) of the Ministry of External Relations from the establishment of cultural cooperation and exchange agreements with the Pan-American nations (the first Pan American Scientific Congress in 1908 and 1915) to the formulation of a more articulated state policy in the 1950s. Complementarity, this research pursuit a better understanding of the emergence of the "Brazilian studies" field of knowledge, and may contribute to the historical reconstruction of a complex network of institutions and intellectuals relate to Brazil in the United States (mainly connected to the Hispanic Division and the State Department), and in Europe (specially after the Second World War, and mainly connected to the UNESCO).
