The objective is to analyze the interannual and interdecadal evolution of local thunderstorms as a function of sea breeze penetration. Previous work has shown that the sea breeze can induce local thunderstorms in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo and that extreme events of rainfall are partly a result of global climate variability such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The focus on the sea breeze will be on the evolution of the its frequency of occurrence in Sao Paulo as detected at the IAG meteorological station, based on time series beginning in 1933. The association with thunder observation will be used to characterize the simultaneous occurrence of the two phenomena, sea breeze and thunderstorms, as a first step to attribution of cause. Next, the conclusions obtained with local data will be related to a larger scale particularly during the last 15 years when TRMM data and case studies observed during the CHUVA Project campaign at the Vale do Paraíba will be studied.
