Abstract

This project aims to produce a commented translation (from German into Brazilian Portuguese) of the interrogatories conducted by the Gestapo (Nazi secret police) with two members of the White Rose. The White Rose was a resistance group in Nazi Germany, composed primarily of young students from the University of Munich. The translation process will be guided by a perspective of Translation Studies that emphasizes the source text analysis as an important step of the translation process. This analysis provides a secure basis for every translator's selection. The context leaves temporal, ideological and functional markers in the texts, which might present many challenges to translation. Linguistic and translation competences are often not enough to identify these markers and preserve them during translation. It is also required a detailed historical research. Based on this assumption, the theoretical background of this work comes from different fields of study, such as text linguistics, discourse analysis and historical research and follows the main idea of Christiane Nord's functionalist model (2009). According to the latter, every translation process should start with a top-down analysis: from the source context to the source text. (AU)
