Abstract

The difficulties in the communication between scientists and decision makers can be partly attributed to flaws in the translation of scientific results into strategic options for action and / or viable policies. The aim of the Socio-Climatic Vulnerability Index (SCVI) is to translate the complexity and amount of data produced and compiled by climate and society scientists in a clear and reliable form, enabling an improvement in communication between scientists and decision makers. The first version of SCVI published in the year 2012 was calculated from the numerical combination of social indicators for the year 2000 and climate projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in 2007. In light of the release of new data, on both social indicators (new HDI data for the year 2010) and on climate projections (IPCC Fifth Report), an update of SCVI, which is the objective of this project becomes both necessary and strategic. The comparison between an updated version of the index with the previous one will be relevant to identify possible changes in the spatial pattern of socio-climatic vulnerability in Brazil. This in turn may have implications for the identification of priority regions in terms of policies for adaptation to the climate changes projected for the next decades throughout the country (AU)
