Abstract

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi that grow naturally in foodstuffs, and are capable of generating a wide variety of toxic effects on vertebrate animals, including humans. The toxins exposure predominantly occurs by the ingestion of contaminated food, especially cereals used in the preparation of animal feed, such as corn, wheat, peanuts, and sorghum, among others. In Brazil, fungal contamination of the food is frequent, due weather conditions that favor the development of fungi and mycotoxin production. It is important to emphasize that the processing and storage of grain may alter the microbiota, however mycotoxins remain in the product due to their chemical stability. One of the techniques available to avoid the deleterious effects of mycotoxins it is the use of antioxidants. However, there is always the need to confirm the efficiency of the antioxidants from in vivo studies, whose experimental protocols are generally expensive since they involve the administration of toxin levels with and without the antioxidant to evaluate different types of effects on the productivity of animals, besides clinical and histological data, among others. Fumonisins are one of the major types of mycotoxins occurring worldwide, but frequently in Brazil. The economic impact resulting from aflatoxin contamination occurs at all stages of the production of grains and cereals, breeding and commercialization of products. The objective of this research project is to evaluate the effects of AFB1 and FB1, alone or in combination and associated or not with an antioxidant (curcumin) in broiler chickens, using the following treatments (T): T1 (control): 0 AFB1 + 0 FB1 + 0 Curcumin; T2: 0 AFB1 + 0 FB1 + 222 mg/kg Curcumin; T3: 0 AFB1 + 20 mg/kg FB1 + 0 Curcumin; T4: 0 AFB1 + 20 mg/kg FB1 + 222 mg/kg Curcumin; T5: 0.5 mg/kg AFB1 + 0 FB1 + 0 Curcumin; T6: 0.5 mg/kg AFB1 + 0 FB1 + 222 mg/kg Curcumin; T7: 0.5 mg/kg AFB1 + 20 mg/kg FB1 + 0 Curcumin; T8: 0.5 mg/kg AFB1 + 20 mg/kg FB1 + 222 mg/kg Curcumin. The parameters to be evaluated will include: feed conversion, weight gain, food intake, serum proteins, hematology, liver enzymes, histopathology of viscera, vaccine response and residues of aflatoxin and fumonisin in tissues of viscera and muscles.
