Effect of chronic smoking and abstinence on aneuploidy in oral mucosa cells

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to evaluate cell aneuploidy in smokers and relate it to the amount of the carcinogen consumed. Three groups consisting of cytologic material collected from patients participating in the Outpatient Treatment Program Smoking Heart Institute, Hospital das Clinicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (INCOR-HCFMUSP) and Discipline of Oral medicine, Institute of Science and Technology of São José dos Campos, UNESP will be studied. Group 1: smokers before the anti-smoking treatment; Group 2: nonsmokers; Group 3: individuals in anti-smoking treatment in abstinence for at least one year. Groups 2 and 3 will be equivalent in age and gender to group 1. Citologic smears will be collected from the floor of the mouth bilaterally and processed by the Feulgen technique. Patients will answer a questionnaire in the form of an interview about the frequency and quantity of cigarettes consumed. For the smokers groups, degree of nicotine dependence and concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) will be assessed by data from the Fagerstrom score for expired air through the equipment mini smokerlyzer. The samples will be evaluated for aneuploidy analysis and if the obtained data is parametric, it will be used analysis of variance (ANOVA) and, nonparametric test of Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test.
