Abstract

This research project develops a crucial feature of the current research funded by FAPESP in Brazil. It intends to conduct a meticulous study about art and décadence in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, specifically in The Case of Wagner and other writings from the period of 1888 that deal with the subject-matter. It also intends to analyze the Nietzschean account of the relations between art and décadence in physiological terms. To achieve this goal, this project will investigate how Nietzsche, in carrying out his theory of the art of décadence, appropriates interpretations of Paul Bourget on the subject, reading his Essais de Psychologie Contemporaine (1883). In order to improve the analysis of this guideline feature of the research, this project will have the guidance of Prof. Dr. Chiara Piazzesi and all the necessary support of the institution to which she belongs, namely, the Université du Québec à Montréal.
