Abstract

This research project aims to analyze how the cities of Rome and Naples and their surroundings are represented directly or indirectly through the description of their architectural landmarks and other elements in their landscapes in Statius' Silvae. Present in most of these poems, these places seem to be both a poetic topos used in the encomium of the poems' addressees and also themselves a recipient of praise. Thus, it can be interesting to investigate how these cities are poetically represented by Statius in his Silvae and what is the function of these representations in the structure of the poems. (AU)
