Abstract

Chicken meat has emerged in recent years for their protein quality and affordability. The poultry sector has the highest growth in production volume among all other meat sectors in Brazil. Therefore, the poultry industry has gained increasing importance in applied research. Thinking about the risk to public health, recently the European Union (EU) banned the use of prophylactic antimicrobial additives in animal feed. With this and coupled with intensive farming system in poultry, diseases hitherto controlled became reemerging, avian necrotic enteritis (NE) being a major reemerging diseases in the farms of the EU and of great concern in Brazil. NE is a disease that affects poultry production from 2 to 6 weeks old; primary etiological agent is Clostridium perfringens, a gram positive toxigenic and spore-forming anaerobic growth bacteria. It is estimated that the global loss due to subclinical necrotic enteritis exceed US$ 2 billion. Studies show that stress has an important role in the development of NE, but little is known about how it modulates such development. Considering the importance of the poultry industry in Brazil, studies focusing on the neuroimmune relations in broilers subjected to heat stress are important for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of diseases such as NE. This project aims to assess the immune response and histopathological changes in an experimental model of necrotic enteritis with or without combination of coccidiosis in broilers subjected to heat stress and to correlate the findings through a neuroimmune approach.
