Abstract
The notion that cytokines play a relevant role as mediators among immune, endocrine and nervous system as well as the bidirectional nature of these relationships are now well established. The discovery of common receptors for cytokines and neurotransmitters on nervous and immune cells and the presence of neurotransmitters on lymphoid organs support the existence of these relationships. Cytokines were linked to behavioral alterations such as: disturbances in sleep, appetite, mood, cognition, motivation, energy and fatigue levels, sex drive, and depression and, for sure, to cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In the last 10 years, we have analyzed the relationships among stress /anxiety, innate immune activity and susceptibility to disease; we have also focused on the effects over the immune system of drugs that act on central nervous system (CNS). Some behavioral changes induced by immune reactions were also object of our research. Within this field, 60 scientific papers were published by our group in the last 10 years, 32 in the last 04 years. This thematic project aims on following up the ongoing research developed in our labs and supported by FAPESP (Projects n° 99/04228-7 and n° 04/14128-0). We particularly intent to evaluate, by means of 49 individual projects (object of undergraduate graduate studies and post-doctoral work) the effects of stress, neurotransmitters, CNS acting drugs and peripheral and pineal melatonin on parameters of inflammatory and immune responses; studies on behavioral changes induced by immune reactions, cytokines or LPS are also within our objectives.
