Abstract

Medicinal plants are widely used in traditional medicine and can serve as a basis for the development of new pharmacological agents. Among the species included in the Project Biota - FAPESP ( Proc. No. 09/52237-9 ) under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Wagner Vilegas, stands out with promising biological activities of plants of the genus Astronium. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the antimutagenic activity of 70 % ethanol extracts of leaves of A. urundeuva and A. fraxinifolium against mutagens of direct and indirect action. To evaluate the protective effect of these extracts will be used 4 - nitro - o- phenylenediamine and mitomycin C as direct-acting mutagens, benzo [ a] pyrene, and aflatoxin B1 as indirect-acting mutagens. The results of this project will complement the data from Project Proc. No. 2011/19980-0, which will assist in clarifying the mechanisms by which these extracts may act to protect against DNA damage since it does not have mutagenic potential second Ames test. (AU)
