Abstract

The aggressiveness is a heterogeneous behavior that has many facets and can be related to violence, impulsivity, irritability and hostility. The commonly applied treatment is the use of several medications. However, some individuals exhibit refractory aggression, considered a problem of public order whose only treatment recommended by competent organs and health inspectors is the realization of functional neurosurgical procedures. The amygdala is an important structure in controlling aggressive behavior, and the amygdalectomy leads to reduced aggressive behavior without other neurological or behavioral impairments in patients with pathological aggression disorder. In this project, patients will be submitted to amygdalectomy procedure as approved by the local medical council (Conselho Regional Medical do Estado de São Paulo). This procedure consists in the lesion of the amygdalar complex by radiofrequency under stereotactic guidance, with is considered consecrated method worldwide and in our work environment. On the occasion of the lesion, material for analysis of biochemical content will be collected and the registration of neuronal electrical activity will be performed. Also, images of the patient's encephalon will be made in a Magnetic Resonance device for posterior analyses of the anatomical structures. Thus, the project aims to assess functional results of surgical intervention and information about patients with refractory aggressive disorder, using the neuroimaging, clinical evaluation, neurochemistry and electrophysiology.
