Abstract

Coatings are important for protection of several items (from appliances/electronics, vehicles, building, marine and aerospace usage, to industrial sites), avoiding the weathering while providing aesthetic finishing. Reaching an ideal balance between mechanical, optical and chemical properties is the constant challenge to the development of new coatings. In the most, coatings are chemical thermo-sets constituted by urea derivatives, whose melamine resins are highlighted due to their solvent resistance, transparency, and property modulation by alkylation, polymerization and methylolation. There are few works in literature that focus this class of resins, and the information is poorly given about the studied-resin characteristics (molar mass, hydroxyl content, etc.) - furthermore, they always combine to the same classes of resins (polyester, acrylic) as polyols, once melamines promote the cross-linking through hydroxy-condensation. The project's objective is to develop polymeric matrices based on melaminic and poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) resins for application as coatings. The PC attracts attention from academic and industrial sector due to its excellent mechanical, optical and process properties - being the 2nd most produced polymer in the world. The PC to be used will be hydroxy-functionalized throughout two synthetic routes: glycolysis and copolymerization of bisphenol A with trisphenol A, which will be studied as well, providing the feasibility to cross-linking of PC-polyol with melamine resin during the cure process of the films. These films will be mechanically, optically and chemically characterized according to "Methodology" section herein. This project, beyond cooperating with new materials - opening precedent to future works - will elucidate the influence of resins' structural characteristics over the properties of coatings. (AU)
