Abstract

AbstractCovering the period from the emergence of the "Seventh Art" to the contemporary, the following project aims to analyse the relations between theatre and cinema. It will investigate their mutual influence and therefore their consequences that will eventually originate the beginning of a new artistic movement. This requires a thorough historical study of the theatre/film dynamic between the late nineteenth century and the present. The purpose is to establish a detailed account of this dynamic to provide a foundation for further analysis. The project will be supported by the study of plays, emphasising the interactions between actor, camera, spectator and the new scenic territories built on stage by the use of film. These plays include "The seven tributaries of the River Ota" by Monique Gardenberg; "Julia" by Christiane Jatahy and "Not about Love" by Philip Hirsch - examples of the dynamic relationship between cinematic resources and theatrical scene. Supported by the technical and theoretical resources of Patrice Pavis, the analysis will address the cinematic and scenic expedients used. Furthermore, it will consider how both actors work, highlighting their new possibilities in their performance, their interaction with different vehicles and media, and their emerging relations between actors and audience. The analysis will also question the ways of living that flow from these different forms of presence. Finally, it is hoped that the study also adds analytical leverage to the investigation of possibilities in this new "theatre-cinema", and the trends that are foreseen in light of further technological evolution and technical diversification.
