Abstract

Global demand for food is continuously increasing, driven by economy, population and urbanization growth; therefore, impacts on natural resource tend to develop in the same order. The interest in environmental sustainability has brought a new concept of food packaging, in addition to quality, safety and shelf life of the product; they should be to minimize the environmental impact. However, there are few quantitative information about the environmental impact generated by these biodegradable films, and especially in Brazil, where these environmental performance are not known. In this research project, biodegradable films based on cassava starch nanocomposites, with potential use as active packaging for Prato cheese, will be developed by the casting technique and its environmental assessment will be compared with commercial films. This research will be conducted based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the system boundary from the "cradle-to-grave" and considering environmental impacts as global warming, eutrophication, occupation and transformation of soil, as the effects of toxicity on the environmental and human beings.
