Abstract

Once the set of choices involved in the selection of compositional techniques in a photograph is mediated by ideological universes, this research aims to analyze the photographic coverage of World War II conducted by Revista da Semana during the period in which Brazil was part of this conflict. We will study the different composition techniques used and the different meaning effects that were articulated by these techniques. Thus, our objective is to see how are articulated the meanings in photojournalistic composition from its narrative structure, their form of codified organization. To do so, we will use the method of analysis proposed by Umberto Eco as image rhetoric, involving the five levels of photograph decomposition. We will analyze these images from the perspective of meaning effects that these composition techniques engender with the objective to see what were the meanings woven in that event in that particular space, as well as what were the mediated discourses about Brazilian participation in the conflict in these images.
