Abstract

The color analysis in dentistry is normally accomplished by visual comparison between a standard color guide (scale) and colors presented by the natural dentition or restorative material. Despite being simple and accessible, this method has poor reproducibility and reliability due to variations of interpretation and subjectivity of individuals. The use of instrumental methods of color analysis ( colorimeters, spectrophotometers) proven to result in improved reliability and reproducibility of data, however, often do not represent the actual color sensation perceived by individuals . The development of CCDs and CMOS sensors of digital machines, as well as the evolution of the processing power of personal computers has enabled significant advances in processing and analysis of digital images. From the acquired know-how in the development of Project PIPE FAPESP, was developed specialist software for the analysis and comparison of color in dentistry based on computer processing of digital images ScanWhite (SW). This work aims to establish the laboratory and clinical performance of this software and validate it for use in clinical and laboratory research of color in dentistry. 2 experiments will be conducted. At first the reproducibility of the color readings (SW) are compared to those obtained by using the spectrophotometer Vita Easyshade Advanced - Vident (ES) used as the gold standard. The 16 shades of reference 5 Vita Classical color scales will be examined and photographed by two trained examiners use the (SSc) and (SW) . Each examiner will conduct two sequences of color readings with an interval of seven days between them. These color readings will be performed randomly and blindly. The intra and inter examiner reproducibility for each method will be determined by the coefficient of inter -class correlation (ICC). The relationship between (ES) and (SW) will be determined by the Pearson correlation coefficient. The reliability and validity of the method is estimated by the values of sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative ratio of likelihood. Will be built to the method (SW) and the ROC curve estimated AUROC curve, using as gold standard spectrophotometer readings (ES). For the in vivo study, the same analysis methodology will be used , with the difference that in this case , the upper incisors and canines of 18 volunteer patients will be evaluated (n = 108) . The significance level is 5%.
