Abstract

Several factors are involved in regulating the metabolism of white adipose tissue, including glucocorticoids which are hormones produced by the adrenal cortex. In the excess glucocorticoids for prolonged periods a clinical condition called Cushing's syndrome settles. One characteristic of this syndrome is the redistribution of fat in the central regions of the body, and the mechanisms involved in this process are not well understood. Studies have associated this metabolic alteration with changes in the action of the enzymes 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 (11BHSD1) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). It is known that glucocorticoids act on LPL and MR and has its tissue concentration regulated by 11BHSD1. However, as there is a inconsistency in the literature regarding the effects of excess glucocorticoids on the TAB, the aim of this project is to investigate the possible effects of excess of these hormones on lipogenesis in various adipose pads, considering its action on 11BHSD1 and LPL enzymes, and on MR.
