Abstract

The main aims of the present study are: to obtain and characterize cellulose nanofibers from soybean by-products (straw and bean pods) using different pretreatments (chemical, mechanical and enzymatic). First, the residue will be milled using knife and cryogenic mills. Then, chemical treatment (alkali treatment, bleaching/delignification) of the lignocellulosic biomass to obtain a fraction rich in cellulose. Nanofibers will be obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis ( xylanases and glucanases) and by sonification. These processes will be combined in order to optimize the nanofibers production. The composition of the lignocellulosic material will be determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC ). Two concentrations of enzymes will be tested with different treatment times. The variables studied to optimize this step will be: ( a) determination of reducing sugars and ( b ) zeta potential. The nanofibers cristallinity will be characterized by x-ray diffraction and the morphology observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At the end of the present study, it will be expected to optimize the production of nanofibers with potential application in biodegradable films, aiming the process which have less environmental impact.
