Abstract

The main aims of the present study are: (i) to extract and characterize cellulose nanofibers from soybean by-products (straw and bean pods) using different pretreatments (chemical, mechanical and enzymatic) and, (ii) to evaluate the use of these nanofibers as potential reinforcement material to biocomposite applications (strengthening protein or starch based films). Initially the soybean byproduct will be ground using mechanical methods and then the nanofibers extracted by chemical (sulfuric acid) and/or enzymatic (laccase and laccase-xylanase) treatments, followed by mechanical treatments to obtained individualized nanofibers (ball milling and high-pressure homogenization). The nanofibers cristallinity will be characterized by x-ray diffraction and the morphology observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The structure of the nanofibers will be investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) in order identify any chemical changes due to chemical, enzymatic or mechanical treatments. The influence of the added nanofibers on mechanical properties, thermal stability, hydrophilicity and water vapor permeability, in the films processed, will be evaluated by proper techniques. The morphology of the resultant films will be investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for a better understanding of the relation between structure-properties. Lignocellulosic composition will be also determined. The present study is inserted in the area of nanobased materials processing and is expected, as a result of this research, to give some contributions to a better use of wastes and renewable resources, largely available in our country.
