Abstract

Epilepsy affects approximately 1% of the world population and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most frequent type, representing 40% of the patients, these are often refractory to medical treatment. One of the most used tools to study the mechanisms involved in TLE are animal models. Despite several animal models currently available and widely studied, the majority of these present lesions which are not commonly identified in patients such as: ischemia, trauma and status epilepticus (SE). Therefore, we propose to work with animal models which have been more recently described and that present lesions which are closer to that found in patients with TLE. We will study gene expression using next generation sequencing tecnology in two animal models of TLE. In addition, we will make these data available in public databases.
