Abstract

The society articles are one of the main highlights in the newspapers and magazines of the Belle Époque in both France and Brazil with their descriptions of salons, fashion and many events and celebrities. The Carnet Mondain, as it is nominated in french, has a unique and characteristic format, in which coexist a fabulous universe of elegance and a highly hierarchized social space, easily recognizable by the salons' regular visitors and the curious newspapers readers. This project aims to establish a comparative analysis of the society articles produced by two authors, Marcel Proust and João do Rio. It is important to notice that although these writers have much contributed for these genres, this facet in their respective literary productions is still very little studied. The analysis will be developed by an exam of their descriptions of the salons of the Belle Époque in Paris and Rio de Janeiro, willing to demonstrate the importance of those society articles for their respective literary productions, with subjects like the women's habits, the salons and fashion having a major role in both Proust's novel and João do Rio's literary works.
