DOSE-RESPONSE OF OCCLUSION PRESSURE AND EXERCISE INTENSITY IN MORPHOLOGICAL AND NEURAL ADAPTATION IN A STRENGTH TRAINING PROTOCOL

Abstract

Low-intensity resistance training (20% to 50% of one maximum repetition (1-RM)), associated with blood flow restriction (BFR), promotes augments in muscle mass and strength. The reduced blood flow in the working muscle, seems to increase the fast twitch fibers recruitment, promotes metabolites accumulation and stimulates the intracellular signaling pathways related to muscle hypertrophy. It has been thought that the manipulation of some variables, specifically, the occlusion pressure and/or exercise intensity, may be able to positively modulate the above mentioned mechanisms. Although, due to differences in BFR protocols among studies, it is not possible to determine the best combination of this variables in a BRF exercise program. Thus, the present study aim to observe the chronic adaptations (i.e. morphological and neural) following BRF protocols with different occlusion pressure and/or exercise intensity. The experimental design will be composed by four groups: 1) 20% 1-RM and 40% occlusion pressure (TF20/40); 2) 20% 1-RM and 80% occlusion pressure (TF20/80); 3) 40% 1-RM and 40% occlusion pressure (TF40/40); 4) 40% 1-RM and 80% occlusion pressure (TF40/80). In order to reduce the intra-subject variability, each volunteer will perform two of the four exercise protocols (one for each leg). It is hypothesized that the increases in occlusion pressure and/or exercise intensity will augment the morphological and neural adaptations. Thus the greater exercise intensity and occlusion pressure group (TF40/80) will present greater adaptations compared to the lower intensity/occlusion group (TF 20/40).
